The Beatles
The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The group consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They are widely regarded as the most influential band in the history of popular music. The Beatles helped lead the so-called British Invasion of the United States in the mid-1960s, a period when British music became incredibly popular worldwide. Their sound started as a mix of skiffle, beat, and 1950s rock and roll, but they later experimented with many other genres, including Indian music, classical strings, and psychedelic rock. The band's immense popularity became known as Beatlemania. They stopped performing live in 1966 to focus on their studio recordings, which resulted in some of the most highly praised albums ever made, such as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Abbey Road. The band officially broke up in 1970, and all four members went on to have successful solo careers. John Lennon was killed in New York City in 1980, and George Harrison died from cancer in 2001. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have continued to make music and perform as solo artists to this day. The group's legacy remains massive, and they continue to hold the record for the most number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
