Singapore
Singapore is a city-state located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. As of 2016, it has a population of approximately 5.7 million people living in a total area of 716 square kilometers. Since the latter half of the 20th century, the country has continued to experience high economic growth, with a per capita income of 55,150 US dollars as of 2014. As of 2012, the country's main industries are services, mining, wholesale and retail, and transportation and communications, and the financial services industry in particular plays a role as the financial center of Southeast Asia. It is also a tourist city, with 11.86 million visitors as of 2014. Since its independence from Malaysia in 1965, the ruling People's Action Party has held an overwhelming majority in parliament. Since becoming a British colony in 1824, it has developed as a free trade port, and after being occupied by the Japanese military during the Pacific War, it gained independence from the UK, and is still a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations. As of 2010, it is a multi-ethnic country with Chinese making up 70% of the total population, Malays (13.4%), Indians (9.2%), etc., and Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English are the official languages. Religions are Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Taoism and Hinduism, and each religion has its own national holiday.
