The Republic of the Philippines (Philippines), commonly known as the Philippines, is a republic located in Southeast Asia. It is an island nation that borders Japan across the Philippine Sea, the Republic of China across the Luzon Strait, Malaysia across the Sulu Sea, Indonesia across the Celebes Sea, and Vietnam across the South China Sea. The Philippines is bordered by the Philippine Sea to the east, the South China Sea to the west, and the Celebes Sea to the south. The capital is Manila. The country's name comes from Philip, the 16th century Spanish crown prince.
