One Direction

One Direction were an English-Irish pop boy band formed in London in 2010 during the seventh series of the British television music competition The X Factor. The group consisted of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. After finishing in third place on the show, they signed with Simon Cowell's record label, Syco Records, and quickly rose to global fame with their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" in 2011. They are widely recognised as one of the most successful boy bands in music history, known for their massive fan base, record-breaking album sales, and hits including "Story of My Life," "Best Song Ever," and "Night Changes." Zayn Malik left the group in 2015, and the remaining four members continued as a quartet until they announced an indefinite hiatus in 2016 to pursue individual projects. Liam Payne tragically passed away in 2024. As of June 2026, the surviving members—Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik—are all active as successful solo artists, regularly releasing new music and touring the world, though the band itself remains on permanent hiatus.
