Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial is a prominent national monument located at the western end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to honour the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Designed by architect Henry Bacon in the style of a classical Greek temple, the structure is surrounded by 36 large columns, which represent the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. Inside the main chamber sits a massive, seated sculpture of Lincoln, created by Daniel Chester French, which looks out over the Reflecting Pool toward the Washington Monument and the United States Capitol. The walls of the interior are inscribed with the text of two of Lincoln’s most famous speeches: the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address.
