Hollywood Sign
The Hollywood Sign is a world-famous landmark situated on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California. The sign consists of nine large, white, capital letters that spell out the name of the district, "HOLLYWOOD." It was originally created in 1923 as a temporary outdoor advertisement for a local real estate development called "Hollywoodland." Although it was only intended to stay up for a year and a half, the sign became a recognised symbol of the burgeoning American film industry and was eventually preserved. Over the decades, the sign fell into disrepair several times, leading to a major restoration project in 1978 when the original letters were replaced with more durable steel versions.
