Gateway Arch
The Gateway Arch is a massive, stainless steel monument located in St. Louis, Missouri, on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Designed by the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, it was built as a memorial to the westward expansion of the United States and is often called the "Gateway to the West." Construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1965. Standing at exactly 192 metres tall, it is the tallest man-made monument in the United States and the world’s tallest arch. Its unique, weighted catenary curve shape is made from a steel frame covered in glistening, weather-resistant stainless steel plates that reflect the sunlight and the changing colours of the sky throughout the day.
