Eris is a dwarf planet with an estimated diameter of 2,326 kilometres and is 14.6 billion kilometres away from the Sun.

Eris was discovered on January 5, 2005. Eris got scientists to think about what a planet actually is. That caused a lot of talk and opinions among the people who study everything about space. They didn't always agree and that's why there was a discussion. So Eris was a special name for a special discovery that caused many conversations and opinions among the smart people who know everything about planets! She is named after an ancient Greek goddess who was known for causing quarrels and disagreements.

Eris is about 2.3 times as far from the sun as Pluto. It is slightly smaller than Pluto, but has about the same type of composition: a rocky core surrounded by a mantle of ice. It is likely that Eris, like Pluto, has a thin atmosphere that consists mainly of nitrogen. This atmosphere is likely to form when frozen gases evaporate when Eris is closer to the sun.

Eris has a famous moon named Dysnomia, named after Eris' daughter. Dysnomia is considerably smaller than Eris itself.
