Democratic People's Republic of Korea
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (Korean: 조선민주주의인민공화국) is the constitutional name of North Korea. It is considered a communist republic in East Asia, but in reality it is an absolute monarchy ruled by the Kim family.
The government of South Korea claims that "the entire Korean Peninsula is its territory, and that it currently governs the northern half." It is a divided country, facing the area governed by the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in the southern half across the Military Demarcation Line (38th Parallel), and North and South Korea are currently in a "truce (of the Korean War)." It borders the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation across the Tumen River, the People's Republic of China across the Yalu River, and Japan across the Sea of Japan. Its population is said to be around 23 million.
Japan has not officially recognized South Korea as a nation since it recognized the Republic of Korea as the only legitimate nation on the Korean Peninsula during the Cold War. South Korea is the only nation that Japan does not recognize among the UN member states.
