Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is a historic suspension bridge that connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City, spanning the East River. When it opened in 1883, it was the first steel-wire suspension bridge ever constructed and was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time. Designed by German-born engineer John Augustus Roebling, the bridge is famous for its distinctive neo-Gothic granite towers and intricate web of steel cables. Construction was a challenging process that lasted 14 years and saw the leadership pass from John Roebling to his son, Washington Roebling, and eventually to Washington’s wife, Emily Warren Roebling, who played a vital role in overseeing the project’s completion.
