Australia is a continent consisting of the island continent itself, along with the island of New Guinea, and is sometimes referred to as Sahul to avoid confusion with the country of the same name. It's part of the broader geographical region of Oceania, which is not a continent itself but a collection of islands. The continent of Australia is defined by its own tectonic plate, and it is distinct from New Zealand, which lies on the largely submerged continent of Zealandia.
