Republic of China

The Republic of China (ROC) is a democratic republic located in East Asia and a former permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

It is the second largest republic in Asia, established in mainland China in 1912, and has had effective control over Taiwan and the surrounding islands since 1949. It shares territorial waters with Japan, the Philippines, and the People's Republic of China.

Although only a few countries officially recognize the Republic of China as a nation, due to historical reasons, it has relations quasi-diplomatic with many other countries as a de facto independent region.
